Om museet

The princely well house (Brunnenhaus) was built in 1702 over a spring, the so-called Heiliger Bronnen (Holy Spring), about one and a half kilometers from the palace of the Princes of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst. The Nuremberg well and pipe master Martin Löhner built a pumping station for it, driven by oxen on an inclined treadwheel. Through wooden pipelines the water reached the palace, the nursery garden, and the brewery. In 1729 a water tower with its own reservoir was added, which was raised by a story in 1887 under Prince Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst.

In 1920 an electric pump replaced the oxen, and at the end of the 1920s the well house was shut down. Only in the very dry summer of 1947 was water drawn from the spring once more.

From 1959, an initiative around the painter Ludwig Doerfler campaigned for the preservation of the facility. The first visits took place in 1967, and in 1972 the local tourism and local history association – today the Verein für Tourismus und Heimatpflege Schillingsfürst-Frankenhöhe – opened the Brunnenhausmuseum with regular opening hours. In 2006/07 the ensemble was comprehensively renovated.

Besides the treadmill system, unique in the German-speaking world in terms of technology and state of preservation, the museum includes the furnished well keeper's apartment with ox stable, the water tower with displays on crafts and agriculture, an herb garden, and a museum barn with agricultural equipment.
