Museum of art and cultural history at the Obertor gate in Neuss, with an important Symbolist collection, naïve art and finds from the Roman camp of Novaesium.
Created for the Neuss State Garden Show (Landesgartenschau), the exhibition traces how people have reshaped the Lower Rhine landscape from the Stone Age through Roman times and the Middle Ages to industrialization.
Annual exhibition at the Feld-Haus on the mass-produced oleograph around 1900, which decorated living rooms with everything from stag motifs to art reproductions.
Works by self-taught artists such as André Bauchant and Max Raffler on the relationship between humans and animals; at the same time, the naïve art holdings restored after the 2022 water damage return to view.
Om museet
The museum's roots lie in the Neuss antiquities society founded in 1839. In 1908 Pauline Sels, widow of the physician Clemens Sels, left the city an art collection and a fortune on condition that a museum be built in the center; the building on the market square opened in 1912. After it was destroyed in World War II, the collection moved into the Obertor, the medieval city gate of Neuss.
As the holdings kept growing, Harald Deilmann designed a new building, which opened in 1975 with a connection to the Obertor and was comprehensively renovated by 2015. In 2010 the Feld-Haus was added on the Kirkeby-Feld near the Museum Insel Hombroich, a branch for the collection of more than 30,000 popular prints assembled by former museum director Irmgard Feldhaus. Water damage in May 2022 forced long closures and restoration work; the Roman Collection returned in a new presentation in October 2025.
The art collection ranges from medieval panel paintings and 17th-century Dutch painting to the Nazarenes and Pre-Raphaelites and on to Symbolism, for which the museum holds a special position in Germany with works by Gustave Moreau and his circle. These are complemented by Rhenish Expressionism, naïve art and contemporary color painting. The archaeology department shows finds from the Roman legionary camp of Novaesium, which has been part of the Lower Germanic Limes UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021.
