Alexandra Bircken: Silver Lining

The Cologne-based artist presents a collage about 23 meters long made of photos, clippings, screenshots, and objects as a personal image archive.

Om museet

The Langen Foundation is based on the art collection of Viktor and Marianne Langen, a married couple who over several decades assembled mainly Japanese painting and sculpture, along with other non-European and modern works. They acquired many of the pieces on their own trips to the regions where they were made.

The site goes back to the collector Karl-Heinrich Müller, who from 1994 set out to transform the former NATO missile station near Neuss into a place for art, architecture, and nature. At his invitation, the Japanese architect Tadao Ando visited the grounds and designed a model. When Marianne Langen saw the plans in 2001, she decided to have the building constructed at her own expense, without public funding, as a home for her collection.

Opened in 2004, the building of exposed concrete, glass, and steel is set into the station's old earth embankments. A long, glass-encased wing houses the narrow “Japanraum” (Japan Room), while two halls about eight meters high are partly sunk into the ground; a large reflecting pool and an outdoor staircase connect architecture and landscape. In total, there are about 1,300 square meters of exhibition space.

Alongside presentations from its own collection of more than 600 East Asian works, the Langen Foundation regularly shows exhibitions of international contemporary art. Together with Museum Insel Hombroich, the Skulpturenhalle, and other venues, it forms the Hombroich cultural ensemble.
