Deutsches Dampflokomotiv-Museum
Steam locomotives in the roundhouse of a historic railway depot at the foot of the Schiefe Ebene incline in Neuenmarkt, Upper Franconia.
Om museet
The Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg locomotive depot was built in 1895 under the Royal Bavarian State Railways and expanded in the 1920s. From here, banking engines helped trains up the Schiefe Ebene, a steep section of the Bamberg–Hof line considered the oldest incline in Europe worked purely by locomotives. When steam traction ended in the 1970s, the depot faced demolition.
Building contractor and railway enthusiast Günter Knauß took the initiative to set up a locomotive museum on the site; supported by a nationwide circle of friends, it opened in July 1977. To secure its future, a special-purpose association of the Bezirk Oberfranken (Upper Franconia district), the district of Kulmbach and the municipality of Neuenmarkt took over operation in 1984.
The collection comprises around 60 traction vehicles, including some 30 steam locomotives, some of which are on display in the 15-stall roundhouse around the turntable. Among the best-known pieces are express locomotive 10 001, one of the last steam locomotives built for the Deutsche Bundesbahn, the small branch-line locomotive 98 307 and a 1937 saloon car that Konrad Adenauer used on his trip to Moscow in 1955.
Today films, media stations, a hands-on area for children and a large H0-scale model railway, redesigned in 2021, complement the vehicle display. A nature-and-history trail explores the Schiefe Ebene, and a walking tour leads through the neighboring railway workers' village. On special event days, steam and diesel locomotives run on the museum grounds.
