Deutsches Fahrradmuseum
Extensive collection on bicycle history from the draisine to the present day in the Art Nouveau Villa Füglein in the spa town of Staatsbad Bad Brückenau.
Om museet
The museum is based on the private collection of bicycle expert Ivan Sojc, who previously ran a bicycle shop in the district of Regensburg. In 2002 he moved with his family to the Rhön, bought the Villa Füglein in Staatsbad Brückenau together with a co-founder and had it thoroughly restored. The Deutsches Fahrradmuseum officially opened there in May 2004.
The villa was built in 1908 in Art Nouveau style as an additional guesthouse for a local hotelier; after decades in family ownership it passed to the Free State of Bavaria in 1972. Today the exhibition is spread over 18 rooms on two floors and follows the development of the bicycle chronologically: from an original draisine (running machine) from around 1820 through pedal-crank bicycles and high-wheelers to racing, design and motorized bicycles of the 20th century. Almost all pieces are preserved in their original condition; accessories such as lamps and bells, enamel signs and a large specialist library complete the collection.
The museum is run by a nonprofit company in which the town of Bad Brückenau has a stake. Because admission fees cover only about a quarter of the costs, the museum is also active outside the Rhön: traveling exhibitions are shown at partner museums, and the “Mobile Museum” – an exhibition pavilion with a hands-on course of fun and skill bikes – tours bicycle festivals throughout Germany.
