Om museet

The idea of a German hunting museum emerged around 1900 but was long stalled by disputes over its profile, sponsorship and funding. Only under the Nazi regime was the project realized: in 1934 the well-known antler collection of Count Arco was acquired in Munich and the Deutsches Jagdmuseum association was founded, with numerous Nazi officials on its boards. On October 16, 1938, the museum opened with great propagandistic fanfare in the north wing of Nymphenburg Palace.

After the war, Mayor Thomas Wimmer revived the association in 1949 and in 1960 achieved its conversion into the Stiftung Deutsches Jagdmuseum (foundation). Today its founders are the Free State of Bavaria, the City of Munich, the Deutscher Jagdverband (German Hunting Association), the Bayerischer Jagdverband and the Landesfischereiverband Bayern. On St. Hubert's Day, November 3, 1966, the museum reopened in the Augustinerkirche on Neuhauser Straße, which had been deconsecrated in 1803.

In 1982 the first department on freshwater fishing in the German-speaking world was added, and the museum has borne its current name ever since. On around 3,000 square meters it displays nearly 1,000 taxidermy specimens, artfully decorated hunting weapons, paintings, prints, glass and porcelain with hunting motifs. The museum has commissioned scholarly research into its founding history in the Nazi era and plans to present it critically in the exhibition in the future.
