Yalla. Arabisch-jüdische Berührungen

Exhibition taken over from the Jüdisches Museum Hohenems: artists with family roots in North Africa and West Asia explore Jewish-Arab identities between closeness, loss and exile.

Om museet

Plans for a Jewish museum in Munich existed as early as the late 1920s, but they were realized only decades later. In the 1980s, gallery owner Richard Grimm opened a tiny private museum on Maximilianstraße at his own expense. After about ten years, the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde (Jewish Community) took over the collection and displayed it in its community center on Reichenbachstraße; from 2001, the City of Munich operated this interim solution together with the Stadtmuseum and the city archives.

With the construction of the Jewish Center on St.-Jakobs-Platz, the museum gained a building of its own. The Saarbrücken firm Wandel Hoefer Lorch designed three independent cube-shaped buildings – the main synagogue (2006), the community center and the museum – linked into an ensemble by travertine façades and sightlines. Run by the state capital, the museum opened on March 22, 2007; its founding director was Bernhard Purin.

On some 900 square meters, the basement houses the permanent exhibition “Stimmen_Orte_Zeiten”, which uses audio tracks, ritual objects, photos and a comic to tell Jewish history as part of the city’s history. The upper levels are devoted to temporary exhibitions that often deal with migration, belonging and contemporary art. The museum also helped design the Erinnerungsort Olympia-Attentat München 1972 (memorial to the 1972 Munich Olympics attack) in the Olympiapark and looks after it with guided walks.
