Museum of the Archdiocese of Bamberg next to the cathedral, with the cathedral treasury, the imperial robes of Henry II and Kunigunde, and original cathedral sculptures.
The focus is the Andreasfenster (St. Andrew window) of 1414, the cathedral's only surviving medieval stained glass, shown alongside glass works by contemporary artists such as Gerhard Richter and Imi Knoebel; the restoration is also explained.
The announced exhibition explores Ebrach Abbey, founded in 1127, and the apparent contrast between Cistercian austerity and Baroque splendor.
Om museet
Plans for a dedicated museum for Bamberg Cathedral go back to the early 20th century, but they were not realized until 1966. Since then, the Diözesanmuseum (diocesan museum) has presented treasures from the cathedral and from churches of the archdiocese to the public.
The museum is housed in the Domkapitelhaus (chapter house) right next to the cathedral, a Baroque building erected by Balthasar Neumann in the 1730s. The medieval cloister closely links the building to the cathedral. The rooms were redesigned in the early 1990s, and the exhibition space was expanded in 2005.
Unique in the world is the group of six magnificent robes from the early 11th century associated with Emperor Henry II and Empress Kunigunde, the founders of the diocese, including the famous Star Mantle. In addition, there are textiles from the tomb of Pope Clement II, the only surviving papal tomb north of the Alps.
The cathedral treasury with liturgical objects, the cathedral cross, and original sculptures from the cathedral, brought into the museum to protect them from weathering, complete the collection. Changing special exhibitions and event series round out the program.
