Gärtner- und Häckermuseum
An 1767 gardener's house with courtyard and garden in Bamberg's Gärtnerstadt (Gardeners' Town): the life and work of the vegetable gardeners and Häcker (winegrowers) around 1900.
Om museet
Since the late Middle Ages, Bamberg's gardeners have grown vegetables, herbs and licorice in the area east of the Regnitz; they traded seeds and licorice roots across Europe. The Häcker, as the Franconian winegrowers are called, farmed the slopes around the Domberg and in the 19th century switched to hops, fruit and grain. The inner-city growing areas are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Old Town of Bamberg, and inner-city market gardening has been on the Federal Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2016.
Gardeners and Häcker founded a museum association in 1975, and in 1976 the city decided to set up the museum at Mittelstraße 34. The drive-through house, built around 1767, which the Kauer gardening family converted into a two-family house in 1890/95 and in which the last resident lived until 1969, was thoroughly renovated for this purpose. The city and the association opened the museum on October 14, 1979, and the association has run it on a volunteer basis ever since.
For the 2012 State Garden Show, the exhibition was completely redesigned as part of the World Heritage project "Urban Horticulture" and reopened on April 22, 2012; in 2013 it was nominated for the Bavarian Museum Prize. Living quarters, a black kitchen (smoke kitchen), stable and coach house show the life of a gardener's family around 1900, while film stations explain tools, varieties and trade. One room is devoted to the Häcker, another to the processional figures of the gardeners' brotherhoods. The typical crops grow in the house garden, from where you can continue on to the Bamberg Variety Garden.
