Om museet
The building on Kolpingplatz was built in 1939 as a sanitary facility for the male workers of the Föhrenwald settlement, which from 1940 served as a Nazi model settlement for employees of the nearby armaments factories. After the end of the war, Föhrenwald became a refuge for survivors of the death march from Dachau and soon one of the largest camps for Jewish Displaced Persons; in 1946 the residents set up a mikveh, a Jewish ritual immersion bath, in the bathhouse's basement.
From 1956 onward, Catholic expellees moved into the settlement with their families, and it has been called Waldram ever since. The bathhouse was later converted into housing and was eventually slated for demolition.
In 2012, members of the Historischer Verein Wolfratshausen and the Siedlungsgemeinschaft Waldram founded the association Bürger fürs BADEHAUS Waldram-Föhrenwald to save the building. After the conversion from 2016 to 2018, carried by many thousands of hours of volunteer work, the memorial site opened in October 2018.
On three floors, the multimedia permanent exhibition presents the site's three phases with original objects, photos, films and eyewitness interviews. The association runs the museum, guided tours and educational work on a volunteer basis and has received awards including the Obermayer Award (2022) and the Bürgerpreis (citizens' prize) of the Bavarian State Parliament (2024).
