Om museet

The museum traces its origins to the "Museum erzgebirgischer Alterthümer" (Museum of Ore Mountain Antiquities), founded in 1887 and initially housed in Annaberg's town hall. In 1891 the collection moved to the building at Große Kirchgasse 16, opposite St. Annenkirche, which over the centuries had been home to mayors, wealthy merchants and brewers.

Soon after its founding, the museum acquired important artworks from the church in Arnsfeld, including an altarpiece by Hans Hesse, the painter of Annaberg's Miners' Altar, and late Gothic figures of saints. Today the permanent exhibition ranges from mining, coins and Reformation-era art to Annaberg relief pewter and ceramics, all the way to folk art and Christmas crafts. Among its best-known pieces is the Lenz Pyramid, the oldest surviving Christmas pyramid in the Ore Mountains; a separate hall is devoted to the mining entrepreneur Barbara Uthmann and the craft of passementerie (decorative trimmings).

In 1992, construction work beneath the old town uncovered an extensive silver mine dating from the town's founding around 1500. It was secured and opened as the "Im Gößner" show mine in August 1995; the entrance is in the museum's inner courtyard. Since 2019 the mine has been part of the Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region UNESCO World Heritage Site. The museum is run by the town of Annaberg-Buchholz, which operates it together with the Frohnauer Hammer and the Manufaktur der Träume as its municipal museums.
