Feldbahn-Museum 500
Association-run museum in Nuremberg-Mühlhof with Germany's largest collection of narrow-gauge field railways in the rare 500 mm gauge – visits on operating days and by appointment.
Om museet
The museum is based on the private collection of Nuremberg resident Karlheinz Rohrwild, who gathered locomotives, cars and track material in 500-millimeter gauge. Alongside the widespread 600-millimeter gauge, this was a standard size for field railways (Feldbahnen, light industrial railways), but it was used far less often – for example in brickworks, quarries, peat works, nurseries and mining. Today the nonprofit association Feldbahn-Museum 500 e. V. looks after the collection; it is funded exclusively by its members, a friends' association and donations.
The site lies in the south of Nuremberg in the Mühlhof district on Drahtzieherstraße. The vehicles are kept under cover in several half-timbered sheds and a roundhouse; more than a kilometer of track with numerous switches and turntables winds through the hilly grounds, along with a loop of around 330 meters. From 2008 onward, an exhibition hall was built, with a replica mine in its basement intended to show how the railway was used underground.
The association expressly does not see itself as a purely static museum: as many vehicles as possible are kept in working order and demonstrated in motion during guided tours and operating days, as are old engines and compressed-air equipment from mining. In 2010 the collection comprised 86 locomotives – including steam, diesel and battery locomotives as well as a rare compressed-air locomotive – and more than 400 cars, many of them mine cars and vehicles from brickworks in the Nuremberg area. Special features include the cars of the former Nuremberg zoo railway (Tiergartenbahn), built in 1928, which first ran as a miniature railway in the courtyard of the Verkehrsmuseum (Transport Museum).
