Om museet
On 27 July 1976, the District Council of Middle Franconia decided to found an open-air museum on the southern edge of Bad Windsheim; a support association, which still backs the project today, had already formed in 1975. From spring 1979, the first buildings were dismantled at their original sites and rebuilt on the museum grounds, and the museum opened on 24 July 1982. Founding director Konrad Bedal ran it until 2010, followed by Herbert May; since October 2025, Karin Falkenberg has been at the helm.
On today's 45 hectares stand almost 130 relocated buildings from Upper, Middle and Lower Franconia – farmsteads, craftsmen's houses, mills, sheep farms, brewhouses, barns, a schoolhouse and a small hunting lodge. They are arranged in building groups by region and theme, so that a walk through the grounds takes you, as it were, from village to village and through around 700 years of everyday rural history. The houses of the Middle Ages building group, with the Archaeology Museum and a bathhouse, are particularly old; a building group on the 20th century includes a makeshift home and a steel house, among other things.
Gardens, fields, hop and vine plantings and old domestic animal breeds bring the historic cultural landscape to life. Around 40 permanent exhibitions and information rooms explore topics ranging from beekeeping to Jewish rural life. In the middle of the old town, the Town building group, with the Old Building Yard of 1441, the herbal pharmacy and the Church in Franconia Museum in the Hospital Church, is also part of the museum. The collection comprises about 200,000 objects; in 1991 the museum received the Bavarian Museum Prize.
