Large open-air museum south of Hamburg: more than 40 historic buildings from the heathland and the Elbe marshes, a postwar street, the Agrarium and living history.

The exhibition follows the painter Heinrich Ludwig Meyer-Helm and the local historian Wilhelm Marquardt, who gained recognition after the war despite their Nazi past. Paintings, documents and media stations invite visitors to reflect on how the region has dealt with this history.
The exhibition shows how the village school changed over two centuries, based on the collection of a former head teacher: school desks, wall charts, satchels and teaching materials.
Om museet
The initiative came in 1953 from Willi Wegewitz, then director of the Helms-Museum in Harburg. Because postwar agriculture was changing rapidly, he had an entire farmstead moved to the Kiekeberg near Ehestorf to preserve rural building styles and ways of life. At first the museum remained a branch of the Hamburg institution.
In 1987 the district of Harburg (Landkreis Harburg) took over the site. Under director Rolf Wiese the grounds grew considerably, and the museum built up a network of branch sites in the district. Since 2003 the museum has been run by the nonprofit Stiftung Freilichtmuseum am Kiekeberg foundation; today it is headed by Stefan Zimmermann.
More than 40 buildings and gardens from the 17th to the 20th century stand on around twelve hectares. The heath village shows simple farmsteads of the Geest uplands, while the marsh farms reflect the prosperity of the Elbe marshes. In 2012 the Agrarium opened, a hands-on exhibition on agriculture and food. With the Königsberger Straße, a separate building group is dedicated to the period from 1945 into the 1970s; in 2025 the Ley-Bude, on the district during the Nazi era, was added there, and a historic water mill from Thelstorf is currently being rebuilt.
The collection includes furniture, tools, toys and everyday objects from the region between the Lüneburg Heath and the Elbe. In the living history program, costumed interpreters show how people worked in the countryside. In addition to the four seasonally open branch sites, the museum looks after several heritage sites at their original locations, such as a hydraulic ram installation and a hose-drying tower. The Museumsverband Niedersachsen und Bremen (museum association of Lower Saxony and Bremen) has awarded the museum its museum quality seal.
