The first major institutional solo exhibition in Europe since the death of the American painter, who transformed cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Batman into dark images through gestural abstraction. Organized with ICA Miami and the FRAC des Pays de la Loire.
Om museet
Over several decades, the Hamburg lawyer and entrepreneur Harald Falckenberg (1943–2023) assembled one of Germany's major private collections of contemporary art, now comprising around 1,900 works. Its focus is on German and American art since the 1980s, often with a provocative, socially critical or subcultural edge – artists represented include Martin Kippenberger, Jonathan Meese, Thomas Hirschhorn, Werner Büttner and the Viennese Actionists.
Since 2001 the collection has been housed in a listed factory hall of the former Phoenix-Werke in Hamburg-Harburg. The Berlin architect Roger Bundschuh converted the building by 2008: on five levels and just over 6,000 square meters, he created open exhibition spaces connected by a cascading staircase and able to house large installations permanently.
Since January 2011 the venue has been run by the Deichtorhallen Hamburg. Besides presentations from the collection, it shows major solo exhibitions, including on Philip Guston, Hanne Darboven and Cindy Sherman. A special feature is the sliding-rack storage, where works not on display hang and which is accessible on collection tours. After renovation work, the venue reopens in October 2026 with a retrospective of the American painter Joyce Pensato.
