Om museet

The museum goes back to the collecting activity of teacher Friedrich Krapf, who served as school principal in Jagsthausen from 1910. At his own expense, he financed excavations in the village over many years. The village lay on the Upper German Limes in Roman times, and he recovered vessels, coins and everyday objects. The Roman cemetery he investigated is considered the largest excavated Roman cemetery on the Upper German Limes. In 1928 his collection was entered in the Denkmalbuch (monument register) of the state of Württemberg.

His son Gerhard later preserved and organized the finds. The family finally made them available as a long-term loan so that they could be shown to the public and keep the collector's memory alive. Today the exhibition is housed in the Old Town Hall on Hauptstraße, supported by the municipality of Jagsthausen.

The presentation uses illustrations, texts and short videos to show the "life cycle" of pottery in everyday Roman life around AD 200. The collection includes wine amphorae, urns, handled jugs, mortaria (grinding bowls), remains of water pipes, terra sigillata tableware and 69 Roman coins. In total, the holdings comprise more than 2,000 pieces.
