Om museet
The prison museum is located in the Old Prison in the Freising old town, between Marienplatz and Domberg. It opened in 2014 and has since been continuously expanded by the association Altes Gefängnis Freising e.V.; the work is carried out by around 350 association members who volunteer.
The Hexenturm contains Baroque prison cells. There is also a "more modern" cell from around 1940 and an interrogation room with antique furnishings and torture instruments. The thematic focus is the Zauberbubenprozesse (the magic boys trials): in 1715 to 1717 and 1721 to 1723, mostly young defendants were imprisoned and sentenced. A memorial room is dedicated to them.
Unrelated to the prison, the museum also shows a barber-surgeon's room from the period before World War II, as it existed in Hallbergmoos until 1950. It is equipped with instruments for haircutting, tooth extraction, and cupping, and is a permanent loan from the guild master of Freising's hairdressers. The exhibition rooms on the second floor, the former prison director's apartment, are also rented by the week for art exhibitions.
