Om museet

Rheinbach’s rise as a glass town goes back to the period after the Second World War: in 1947 glass finishers expelled from North Bohemia settled here, and in 1948 the Staatliche Glasfachschule (state glass school) was re-founded as the successor to the school in Steinschönau (Kamenický Šenov) in Bohemia. Soon the first private collections emerged, along with the idea of a museum for Bohemian glass art.

In spring 1968 around 100 citizens founded the association “Freunde edlen Glases” (Friends of Fine Glass), and a few months later the glass museum opened in the former town hall. The Hickisch Foundation formed its core; operations, exhibitions and acquisitions were initially entirely in the hands of the association, and in 1980 the city took over as sponsor.

Since 1989 the museum has been housed in a modern new building set into the Franconian courtyard complex of the former Himmerod Abbey, which also serves as a cultural and community centre; the largest exhibition room doubles as the council chamber. The collection of Bohemian glass was expanded with federal funds, and significant holdings of contemporary studio glass were added. The Open Museum Workshop was established in 2006, and in 2020 three rooms were redesigned under the guiding theme “Bohemian Glass in Biographies”.
