Completely preserved cloth factory from around 1900 in Euskirchen-Kuchenheim: LVR industrial museum with running machines, visitable by guided tour only.
About 200 objects on roughly 550 m² – from historic machines through clothing to sheep breeds – show how animal husbandry, textile technology and fashion have been connected over the last 200 years.
Om museet
The factory building on the Erftmühlenbach was built in 1801 initially as a paper mill and about four decades later was converted into a spinning mill and fulling mill; in the 1860s a steam engine was added. In 1894 the cloth manufacturer Ludwig Müller took over the business and set up a complete cloth factory in which all work steps from raw wool to finished fabric took place under one roof. Durable woolen cloths and loden were produced, for decades both for civilian clothing and for uniforms.
In the late 1950s the small family business, like many other woolen cloth manufacturers, came under competitive pressure and ceased production in 1961. The last owner, Kurt Müller, did not sell the machines, however, but left the factory unchanged. Thus the machinery, counting house, cloth store and even personal belongings of the employees remained preserved for more than two decades as on the last working day.
In 1988 the Landschaftsverband Rheinland took over the ensemble for its decentralized industrial museum, restored buildings and machines, and opened the site as a museum in September 2000. Today the most important textile machines and the steam engine from 1903 are set running again during tours; a new building complements the historic factory with rooms for temporary exhibitions, a café and a shop. The manufacturer family's residence is also accessible.
