Goethehaus Volpertshausen
Half-timbered hunting lodge in Hüttenberg-Volpertshausen where Goethe met Charlotte Buff in 1772 – today a ballroom and local history museum of the Hüttenberger Land.
Om museet
The half-timbered house in Volpertshausen, a district of Hüttenberg, was built around 1720 as a hunting lodge for the Counts of Nassau-Weilburg. The responsible head forester, who also farmed on the side, lived on the first floor; the upper floor contained a large hall for the sovereign’s social gatherings.
The house entered literary history on June 9, 1772: at a ball hosted by Goethe’s great-aunt for young people from Wetzlar, the young man, then a trainee at the Reichskammergericht (Imperial Chamber Court), met 19-year-old Charlotte Buff. Two years later he worked his unrequited love for her into his epistolary novel “Die Leiden des jungen Werthers” (The Sorrows of Young Werther).
The building has belonged to the municipality since 1838, which used it as a school with a teacher’s apartment until 1965 and then for a time as a kindergarten; the half-timbering was exposed in 1934. After the Heimatkundlicher Verein Hüttenberg (local history society) was founded in 1989, a comprehensive restoration began, and on August 9, 1992, the museum opened; the municipality and the society run it jointly.
On around 330 square meters across four floors, the collection shows more than 3,000 objects on everyday life in the Hüttenberger Land – from the making of Hüttenberger Handkäse (a local sour-milk cheese) to living rooms around 1900 to traditional costumes, school furniture, and a shoemaker’s workshop. The ballroom, designed in 18th-century style, provides a contrast; today it hosts readings, theater, and weddings.
