Om museet

The museum's roots go back to 1878, when an association for researching Upper Hessian local history was formed in Gießen and at the same time decided to set up a collection point for archaeological finds and antiquities. As early as the beginning of 1879, the first holdings, mostly from private sources, were on view. In 1912 the association, the town and the entrepreneur Wilhelm Gail brought their collections into a joint society; in 1936 the museum passed entirely into municipal ownership.

Since 1905 the Altes Schloss (Old Palace) on Brandplatz has served as the museum building. Built in the 14th century as a landgraves' castle, it had previously been a residence, chancellery, barracks and warehouse, and was slated for demolition at the end of the 19th century until Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig donated it to the town in 1893 on condition that it house the Upper Hessian collection.

During the air raid of December 1944 the palace burned out almost completely; a large part of the cultural history holdings, along with the inventory books, was lost. Afterward the folk culture collection was rebuilt and the art and ethnology collections were expanded. In 1978 and 1987 the Leib’sches Haus and the Wallenfels’sches Haus on Kirchenplatz were added as exhibition buildings, and in 1980 the rebuilt palace opened.

Following a decision by the city council in fall 2024, the former Oberhessisches Museum has been renamed "Museum für Gießen". The two buildings on Kirchenplatz have been closed since 2022 and are being converted for a new, accessible permanent exhibition focused on the city's history.
