Om museet
The Griesheimer Museum is housed in a listed Gründerzeit commercial and residential building on Groß-Gerauer Straße. It was built by the Jewish merchant family Löb; the two-storey stone house stands out for its rich sandstone decoration. Since 1996 the museum association has used the restored building.
At the rear of the plot stands the cultural barn “Stoikeneschd” (stork's nest). The barn was built in 1803 for the Griesheim Schupp family, was dismantled and re-erected faithfully to the original in the museum courtyard. In the barn's cellar there is a workshop where volunteers restore exhibits such as sewing machines, clocks and furniture.
The museum sees itself as the memory of a town that has changed from a farming village to a residential town since the Second World War; it also includes the district of St. Stephan. Permanent exhibitions in the barn tell of centuries of seed collecting and trading, of the aviation pioneer August Euler and the workshop of the Müller brothers, and of the craft of the Formstecher (pattern block cutters). In addition, the association keeps up traditions such as cider pressing and making Latwerge (plum butter) and invites visitors to festivals and town walks.
