Om museet
Gustav Bauernfeind was born in Sulz am Neckar on September 4, 1848, and is considered the most important German Orientalist painter of the 19th century. After studying architecture in Stuttgart, he first made a name for himself with book illustrations; from 1880 he undertook several journeys to the Near East; in 1896 he moved to Palestine and settled in Jerusalem, where he died in 1904.
That his hometown has a museum dedicated to him goes back to the local historian Hugo Schmid, who had been compiling the family history and the works since 1978. The exhibition opened in the old town hall in 1990; in 2005 it moved to new premises on the Untere Hauptstraße. About 200 works are shown, including around 75 originals in the form of drawings, watercolors and oil paintings, supplemented by photos, letters and documents. The museum is run on a volunteer basis.
