Om museet
The museum is housed in the former Buchloe Schranne, which was built in 1872 as a market hall for the grain trade. In 1917 the local savings and loan association bought the building, had it converted and extended with an additional storey in 1928 and used it as a Raiffeisen bank; a further renovation followed in 1968. The large attic space, the Schrannenboden, still recalls the original use.
The Buchloe and Surroundings Local History Association, founded in 1987, campaigned for a museum of its own. In 1991 the town acquired the building, renovation and fitting-out began in 1992, and on 19 September 1997 the museum officially opened. The association has run it ever since and also uses the Schrannenboden for exhibitions and lectures.
The ground floor covers the history of Buchloe from its founding around 750 to the present, especially the importance of the railway for the town. Also on display are the typesetting shop of a printing works with a working line-casting machine, church tower clocks and sacred art. On the first floor hang paintings by Eduard Bechteler, a cabinet is dedicated to the Nobel Prize winner Erwin Neher, and further rooms show traditional costumes, uniforms, a butterfly collection and a Sudeten German heritage room. Pictures by the Baroque painter Joseph Schwarz are on permanent display in the Schrannenboden. In 2026 the building was made accessible with an exterior ramp and a lift.
