Since 1978 the museum has been housed in the Schöfferhaus, a former school building from 1823 on Schöfferplatz. Following a redesign in 2003, the historic fire station of the volunteer fire brigade also became part of the museum. The city of Gernsheim is the sponsor; care and supervision lie with the Kunst- und Kulturhistorischer Verein der Schöfferstadt (Art and Cultural History Society).

The exhibition is divided into several sections: Ice Age fauna and flora with finds of mammoth, woolly rhinoceros and giant deer; prehistory and early history with Neolithic vessels and Roman pottery; city history; and fishing trades and navigation. A separate section is devoted to the printer Peter Schöffer, born in Gernsheim and an early collaborator of Gutenberg, including a printing press from around 1900.

Further areas show church and pilgrimage history around the Maria Einsiedel chapel, hunting and fishing, and the historic fire brigade. An East German homeland room set up by the Bund der Vertriebenen (Federation of Expellees) can also be viewed in the house.
