Om museet
The VG-Museum project began in 2001 with the idea of bringing together the collections of the Heimatmuseen (local history museums) of Gimbsheim and Eich and supplementing them with finds from the other municipalities of the Verbandsgemeinde Eich (Hamm, Alsheim, Mettenheim). The municipality of Gimbsheim leases the former Storchenschulhaus to the Verbandsgemeinde rent-free; the Verbandsgemeinde covers the running costs, and grants came from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Since 2005 the building has served as a museum, cared for by a working group and a support association.
The building was erected in the 1830s as a classicist rubble-stone building with four classrooms, most recently including a school kitchen and a workshop. On the upper floor, the Ice Age room presents the natural history of the region, including a mammoth skeleton and finds from other Ice Age animals. The archaeology section displays Roman and Frankish finds as well as the ship mill from the 8th century, discovered in 1989. Another room is devoted to the world of work of the 19th and 20th centuries, and a fourth room hosts changing exhibitions.
