Om museet
The foundation of the museum was laid by former mayor (Altbürgermeister) Bartholomäus Schmucker, who, under the motto of gathering up what remained so that it would not be lost, collected everything significant for Ruhpolding's cultural history. This became one of the most complete collections of Alpine folk art and folklore.
The museum is housed in the former ducal hunting lodge, built in 1587 for Duke Wilhelm V. Over two floors are paintings, banners, uniforms, traditional costumes, craft tools, clocks, farmhouse furniture, glass and porcelain, and sacred objects. The oldest piece is probably a 15th-century sword engraved with images of wolves; the more recent objects include a Ruhpolding stagecoach (Stellwagen) of 1852, high-wheel bicycles and the first Ruhpolding skis.
The exhibition shows how people lived, cooked, ate and worked before tourism arrived. Painted chests, a large canopy bed and an extensive weapons and hunting collection complement it, as does a special collection of rocks and fossils from the mountains around Ruhpolding.
