Om museet
Traunstein owes its salt-making history to the brine pipeline from Bad Reichenhall. Between 1617 and 1619, the Bavarian court master builder Hanns Reiffenstuel, together with his son Simon, had a pipe system built from more than 8,000 hand-drilled wooden pipes ('Deicheln') that carried brine into the forested region, and built the saltworks in the Au. Salt was boiled here from 1619 until production ended in 1912.
For the 400th anniversary of the salt town, the Salinenpark open-air museum opened in 2019. Its centerpiece is the reconstruction of the Reiffenstuel pump with a water wheel, and an original, still functioning 19th-century water-column machine from Reichenbach. Information boards explain the technology and the course of the brine; flower meadows, fruit trees and an apothecary garden with around 140 medicinal plants frame the site and open views onto the baroque facades of the saltworks ensemble.
The park is complemented by a permanent exhibition on the first floor of the Ferdinandistock, also since 2019. Titled “Die 1. Pipeline der Welt”, it presents exhibits beneath the old vaults and several films on the history and technology of the brine pipeline.
