Heimatmuseum Seelze
Volunteer-run local history museum in the historic "Alter Krug" in Seelze with themed rooms on everyday life in earlier times and a museum café.
Om museet
The museum's roots go back to 1964, when the Heimatbund opened a Heimatstube (local heritage room) in the old village school in what was then the independent municipality of Letter. The foundation was objects collected mainly by the teacher and local historian Ernst Bock and by Luise Sandmann. The Heimatstube moved several times; under Wolfgang Mathyl, special exhibitions were added.
On April 24, 1991 the Museumsverein für die Stadt Seelze was founded, the first association for the whole town formed in 1974. Already on June 21, 1991 the local history museum opened on the ground floor of a half-timbered house rented by the town on the street Im Sande in Letter; in 2000 an additional room considerably enlarged the space.
In fall 2018 the museum moved into the "Alter Krug" on Hannoversche Straße in the center of Seelze, a listed building on the former military road from Hanover to Osnabrück. The exhibition space doubled, and a café room was created. Since then the offering has been expanded mainly with eyewitness films and media stations. The house is also an official wedding room of the town.
Run purely by volunteers, the museum has shown more than a hundred special exhibitions since its founding and holds the museum quality seal of the Museumsverband Niedersachsen und Bremen, most recently for 2023 to 2029. The permanent exhibition shows furnished rooms such as a barber shop, shoemaker's workshop and workers' kitchen, as well as, in multimedia form, the development of the town and its districts.
