Stadtmuseum Hagen
Museum on the history of the city of Hagen in the former district court building at the Museumsquartier, with a visible storage area, media stations, and a cinema.
Om museet
The roots of the Stadtmuseum (City Museum) lie in the collection of the former "Haus der Heimat," which grew steadily through donations, bequests, and purchases, for example from business families and Hagen shops. In 1987 the first postwar Hagen history museum opened in the former district court building on Hochstraße. In 1997 it moved to the Wippermann-Passage on Eilper Straße, where it was run together with the city archive as the Historisches Centrum Hagen.
The late Neoclassical building on Hochstraße was built from 1863 to 1866 to designs by Carl Ferdinand Busse, an associate of Schinkel, for the city and district court, and later served as a regional court, building authority, and, after reconstruction, police headquarters. Since 2012 it has been used by the city's Museums and Archives department as its administrative seat.
In 2024 the Stadtmuseum returned to the converted building with a newly designed permanent exhibition funded by the state, and since then it has formed the Museumsquartier in the city center together with the Osthaus Museum and the Emil Schumacher Museum. The exhibition on the first floor leads from village to city through objects, films, and audio and media stations; a visible storage area and small rotating displays show further pieces from the collection.
