Drawings and prints from the museum's own collection, ranging from Art Nouveau through early modernism to art after 1945, on view for the first time in decades.
In 1902, Hagen art collector Karl Ernst Osthaus opened the Museum Folkwang in a purpose-built building – one of the first museums anywhere devoted to contemporary art. The Belgian artist Henry van de Velde designed the interiors in the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style. Together with artists, architects and designers such as Johan Thorn Prikker, Osthaus turned Hagen into the center of a reform movement that became known as the "Hagener Impuls" (Hagen Impulse).
After the founder's death in 1921, his heirs sold the collection and the name to Essen in 1922, where they became today's Museum Folkwang. In 1930, a new municipal museum opened in the original Hagen building, initially focusing on Christian Rohlfs. The Nazi "Degenerate Art" campaign hit the museum hard in 1937: around 400 works by Rohlfs alone were confiscated.
After World War II, the museum resumed operations in 1945 and returned to its original building in 1955. Over the following decades it built up a collection of Expressionism, classical modernism and contemporary art, including works by Kirchner, Nolde, Dix, Munch and Rohlfs; an extension was added in the 1970s.
Since 2009 the museum has been called the Osthaus Museum Hagen, and together with the neighboring Emil Schumacher Museum it forms the Kunstquartier Hagen. The museum also includes the Hohenhof, the founder's Art Nouveau villa designed by van de Velde. Since summer 2024, Hagen native Rainer Stamm has directed the municipal museum.
