The museum grew out of a local debate about how to remember the synagogue destroyed in 1938. In 1988 citizens and the town council argued over an additional memorial plaque that was to name the perpetrators of the November Pogrom. At about the same time, the Jewish community's old ritual bath was rediscovered on Schlossplatz. Both led, that same year, to the founding of the Verein für jüdische Geschichte und Kultur Emmendingen (Association for Jewish History and Culture).
The Israelite community had built the half-timbered house with the mikveh in its cellar around 1840, right next to its synagogue. With funding from the Denkmalstiftung Baden-Württemberg and the town, association members restored the listed building over several years, largely as volunteers. The Jewish Museum opened there on April 13, 1997.
On the first floor, the exhibition traces the history of the Jewish community from its beginnings in 1716 to the deportation in 1940 and explains holidays, rituals and everyday life. A media station with a digital memorial book documents the fates of Emmendingen's Jews during the Nazi era; the Jewish community re-founded in 1995 is also presented. Since the end of 2017, the permanent exhibition "Quelle lebendigen Wassers – Mekor Majim Chajim" (Source of Living Water) has focused on the mikveh itself.
The association still runs the museum largely on a volunteer basis, shows temporary exhibitions, organizes lectures and commemorative events, and is part of the network of memorial sites on the southern Upper Rhine.
