Om museet

The origins of Kloster Ebstorf go back to around 1160, when Premonstratensians from Magdeburg founded a religious house here; the convent first appears in documents in 1197. After a fire, Benedictine nuns from Walsrode took over the house and rebuilt it in the style of northern German brick Gothic. The Marian pilgrimage site reached its economic and spiritual peak in the 14th and 15th centuries; the church, the nuns' choir and the fully preserved cloister, glazed toward the courtyard and with stained glass from around 1420, date from this period.

Under Duke Ernest the Confessor, the Reformation arrived in 1529, but the convent did not become definitively Protestant until 1565. Since then, Protestant women have lived here as conventuals under an abbess; the convent is one of the six so-called Lüneklöster (Lüneburg convents) and is administered by the Klosterkammer Hannover.

Ebstorf is world-famous for its map of the world: created around 1300, the depiction measures about 13 square meters, is made up of 30 parchment sheets and is considered the largest known medieval map of the world. It shows the Earth as a disk with Jerusalem at its center and combines geography, biblical history, legends and the animal world in some 2,400 images and texts. The original, rediscovered around 1830, burned in an air raid on Hannover in 1943; a faithful replica is on display in Ebstorf.

The convent rooms with their medieval art treasures can be visited during the summer season on guided tours, some of them led by the conventuals themselves. Concerts, lectures and exhibitions take place year-round in the refectory, the cloister and the Propsteihalle.
