Cabinet exhibition by the Stiftung Hamburger Gedenkstätten und Lernorte on the deportation of around 25,000 Jews to Riga in 1941/42 and how it is remembered.
The museum's roots lie in the postwar period, when many refugees and expellees from East Prussia settled in the Lüneburg area. On the initiative of forester Hans-Ludwig Loeffke, an East Prussian Hunting Museum was established in 1958 in the Altes Kaufhaus, but just a year later it was largely destroyed by arson. After the collection was rebuilt, it reopened in 1964 on Salzstraße and was expanded in 1981 into a hunting and state museum.
In 1987 the state museum, now under academic direction, moved into a new building on the site of the former Kronenbrauerei brewery; since then it has been funded by the federal government and the state of Lower Saxony, and since 1994 it has been run by the Ostpreußische Kulturstiftung. After 1991 numerous exhibition partnerships with institutions in Poland, Lithuania and Russia followed. In 2010 the museum took over the neighboring brewery museum in the historic brewhouse of the Kronenbrauerei.
Between 2014 and 2018 the museum was expanded and gained a Baltic German department. Since then, the late Gothic Scharffsches Haus on Heiligengeiststraße has served as the entrance building with a café, and a new building in the courtyard as the foyer. The permanent exhibition, opened in 2018 and covering around 2,000 square meters, ranges from landscape and wildlife through the Teutonic Order and Prussia to flight, expulsion and integration after 1945.
In March 2026 a dedicated Kant Museum opened in the courtyard – the first permanent exhibition in Germany on the Königsberg philosopher, based on the largest surviving Kant collection.
