Om museet
The energy museum of the Dresden utility DREWAG (now SachsenEnergie) is housed in a listed workshop building on the site of the former Kraftwerk Mitte power station. The building once served as a coal shed and vehicle garage, and from 1926 as the power station's mechanical workshop. After power generation at the site ceased, conversion into an exhibition venue began in 1996.
Opened in the summer of 2002, the museum was devastated by the Elbe flood just a few weeks later and could not reopen until April 2003. From then on, across more than 400 square meters, it told the story of the city's energy supply: from Germany's first municipal gasworks, which Rudolf Sigismund Blochmann put into operation in Dresden in 1828, to the construction of the first electricity plant and on to today's district heating network. On display are transformers, switchgear, cables, measuring instruments and meters, complemented by multimedia shows on gas and water. A friends' association looks after the collection and guided tours.
The museum closed at the end of 2023. The building is undergoing extensive renovation and being expanded with an annex and an open-air stage; reopening is planned for 2027. Until then, two special exhibitions on vacuum-tube and semiconductor technology and on lightning protection can be viewed in the storage facility by appointment.
