Norwegian artist A K Dolven places her video work “still life” in dialogue with the 18th-century French porcelain bouquet; due to the closure, on view again only from October 31, 2026.
Om museet
The foundation was laid by Augustus the Strong, who, like many princes of his time, was a passionate collector of East Asian porcelain and began building a systematic collection in 1715. After Johann Friedrich Böttger succeeded in producing porcelain in Europe in 1708, the elector founded the first European porcelain manufactory in 1710, which was moved to Meissen shortly afterward. To present Chinese, Japanese, and Saxon porcelain together, he had the Holländisches Palais converted into the Japanisches Palais; after his death in 1733, however, this plan was never completed.
In 1876, the collection moved to the Johanneum. During World War II, the holdings were evacuated to palaces and mines, so they largely survived the destruction of Dresden. In 1945, the Red Army took the porcelain to the Soviet Union; most of it returned in 1958. Since 1962, the collection has been on display in the galleries of the Zwinger.
In 2006, New York architect Peter Marino redesigned the rooms and enlarged the exhibition space. Today the collection comprises around 20,000 objects, of which about 2,000 are on display: Chinese porcelain from the Ming and Qing dynasties, Japanese Arita porcelain, and Meissen porcelain from its beginnings to around 1815. The redesigned Böttgersaal is devoted to early Meissen production. Together with the Rüstkammer (Armory), the Porzellansammlung also uses rooms of the state apartments (Festetage) in the Residenzschloss.
