The Hersbruck Art Museum goes back to an initiative of artist Anna M. Scholz, who in the 1990s wanted to create a house for showing, promoting and preserving art away from the big cities. On April 24, 1997, the Förderverein Kunstmuseum Hersbruck (Hersbruck Art Museum friends' association) was founded for this purpose; it still runs the house today.

The museum is housed in the so-called Einlasshaus at the Spitaltor tower, a simple half-timbered building probably built in the late 17th or 18th century next to the town gate, most recently used as social housing. The city made it available to the association; with much volunteer effort, two exhibition rooms and storage areas were created by spring 2000. In October 1999 the sculpture garden in the northeastern moat had already opened; today it is part of a sculpture trail through the old town.

The house shows changing exhibitions with a focus on regional art, including works from its own collection. A separate archive preserves more than 2,500 works. Since 2016, in addition to free admission, "Einblick frei" (free glimpse) has been offered: a short look at the current show is possible even at night.
