Om museet

People were already bathing on the bank of the Fulda in the Unterneustadt district, near the Drahtbrücke, around 1880. This was the site of "Sinning's Badeanstalt," one of Kassel's first river baths, which also offered women their own bathing area; men and women bathed from separate pontoons with changing cabins. Around the turn of the century, a warm-water bathhouse was added, in which Fulda water heated with wood was stored in a tower and piped into bathtub cabins with terrazzo floors.

After the city opened the Auebad, the operator gave up the river bath in 1923. Bath attendant Hellmut Ulbricht took over the building and continued to run it as a medical bath under the name "Kurbad Jungborn." In October 1943 the building was damaged in air raids but was subsequently repaired; it is the only structure on the river wall to have survived the wartime destruction. Spa operations continued until 1998.

Afterward the building stood empty and fell into disrepair. In 2004 a friends' association was formed, which took over the now-listed building from the city on a long-term hereditary lease in 2005 and renovated it with a great deal of volunteer labor until 2011; two of the old bathing cabins were restored in the process. Since 2011 the association has run a small museum there on bathing culture in Kassel – from the river bath through public outdoor and indoor pools to the tub bathhouse and the private bathroom. In 2024/25 the exhibition was completely redesigned and reopened in October 2025. The ensemble also includes a café with a terrace above the river and a room for a water sports club.
