LVR-Industriemuseum

Industrial museum of the Landschaftsverband Rheinland at eight historic factory sites; headquarters in the Zinkfabrik Altenberg in Oberhausen.

Midlertidigt lukket
Midlertidigt lukket (forventet til 2027). The Zinkfabrik Altenberg (headquarters in Oberhausen) is closed because of renovation and redesign of the permanent exhibition, with reopening expected in fall 2027; only individual events take place there. The other sites of the network are open (see locations).

Om museet

The Landschaftsverband Rheinland founded the museum in 1984 under the name Rheinisches Industriemuseum, when numerous mines and factories in the Rhineland were shutting down. At the same time, the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe built up its own industrial museum; together, the two associations made North Rhine-Westphalia a pioneer in industrial heritage preservation. The guiding idea was to tell industrial history at the original sites – in preserved factories, workshops and settlements.

The first site, in 1986, was the Gesenkschmiede Hendrichs in Solingen, which began demonstration operation. In the late 1990s followed the Kraftwerk Ermen & Engels in Engelskirchen, the Textilfabrik Cromford in Ratingen, the Zinkfabrik Altenberg in Oberhausen, the Papiermühle Alte Dombach in Bergisch Gladbach and the St. Antony-Hütte in Oberhausen, and in 2000 the Tuchfabrik Müller in Euskirchen. In the Peter-Behrens-Bau, the former main warehouse of the Gutehoffnungshütte, is the central depot with more than 250,000 objects.

The Zinkfabrik Altenberg next to Oberhausen's main train station is the seat of the museum headquarters. In the zinc rolling mill, founded in 1854/55 by a Belgian company and in production until 1981, the museum showed a large exhibition on heavy industry on the Rhine and Ruhr from 1997. Since this show was dismantled, the building has been undergoing renovation; from fall 2027, a new permanent exhibition on the living and working world of industrial society, with a steam hammer, steam locomotive and hands-on stations, is to open. The other sites cover the sectors of metal, textiles, paper and electricity and still demonstrate many historic machines.
