Om museet

Journalist and human rights activist Rainer Hildebrandt opened a first exhibition in an apartment on Bernauer Straße in October 1962, shortly after the Wall was built. Due to the great demand, it moved in June 1963 to the building on Friedrichstraße that stood as the last house directly in front of the Allied border crossing Checkpoint Charlie. From here, events at the border could be observed; the building also became a point of contact for refugees and escape helpers.

Over the years, escape helpers and refugees entrusted the museum with the means of their escapes: modified cars with hiding places, a hot-air balloon, a chairlift, a mini submarine and light aircraft. Alongside the history of division, the museum has long been devoted to the worldwide nonviolent struggle for human rights, from Gandhi and Martin Luther King to dissidents in Eastern Europe and Russia.

For many years the museum was backed by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft 13. August e. V., founded by Hildebrandt in 1962; since 2018 it has been run by a nonprofit company. After Hildebrandt's death in 2004, his widow Alexandra Hildebrandt took over as director. The museum is financed largely by admission fees, displays its collection on around 2,000 square meters across three levels and is one of the most visited museums in Berlin.
