Om museet

The museum traces its origins to the Reichspostmuseum, founded in 1872 by Postmaster General Heinrich von Stephan – one of the very first museums of the history of technology and the oldest postal museum in the world. In the late 1890s its collection received its own wing in the extension of the Reichspostamt (Imperial Post Office) at the corner of Leipziger Straße and Mauerstraße, a magnificent building with a light-filled atrium and a large sculptural group above the corner entrance.

The building was badly damaged in World War II, leaving only the outer walls standing. The division of the city also split the holdings: in East Berlin, a postal museum reopened on a limited scale in 1960, while in the West large parts of the collection went to Frankfurt am Main, and a smaller Berlin postal museum was established near the Urania in 1966.

After reunification, the museums were merged under the Museumsstiftung Post und Telekommunikation. The historic building was extensively renovated from 1992 to 1999 and reopened in March 2000 as the Museum für Kommunikation Berlin.

The permanent exhibition presents around 2,000 objects on post, writing, telecommunications, radio, and television across some 3,000 square meters. The treasury displays particularly precious items such as the Blue Mauritius, complemented by changing special exhibitions on current communication topics.
