Om museet

Museum Barberini stands on the site of the palace of the same name that Frederick the Great had built on the Alter Markt in 1771/72, right next to the Stadtschloss (City Palace). The architects Georg Christian Unger and Carl von Gontard modeled it on the Baroque Palazzo Barberini in Rome. In the mid-19th century, Friedrich Wilhelm IV had the building expanded with side wings and halls used by Potsdam associations for concerts, exhibitions and lectures; later it housed, among other things, a public library, a youth hostel and the registry office.

The palace was destroyed in the air raid on Potsdam in April 1945, and the ruin was cleared in 1948. For decades the site remained a green space and parking lot, and for a time a temporary theater stood there. As part of the restoration of Potsdam's historic center, the Hasso Plattner Foundation made the reconstruction possible: from 2013 to 2016, a museum with a historic facade and a modern interior was built to designs by Hilmer & Sattler und Albrecht, with around 2,200 m² of exhibition space.

The museum opened in January 2017 and quickly established itself as one of the most visited art museums in Germany. Since 2020, it has permanently displayed the collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painting of SAP co-founder Hasso Plattner, with an exceptionally large group of works by Monet. In addition, the museum stages up to three major temporary exhibitions a year with international partners – from Rembrandt and Picasso to Gerhard Richter – accompanied by an extensive education program.
