City museum in the Romanesque Andreasstift presenting the history of Worms from the Stone Age through the Romans and the Nibelungs to Luther's appearance in 1521.
For the 500th anniversary, the museum shows the only completely preserved copy of Tyndale's English New Testament printed in Worms, which had a lasting influence on the language of the English Bible.
Om museet
The museum's roots go back to 1881, when the Wormser Altertumsverein (Worms antiquities society) put finds from the collections of physician Carl Koehl and industrialist Maximilian von Heyl on public display in the Paulusmuseum. In 1928 the collections passed into the ownership of the city, which had the former Andreasstift (St. Andrew's collegiate foundation) converted. The Museum der Stadt Worms opened there on July 1, 1930.
The Andreasstift is a listed ensemble consisting of a Romanesque collegiate church, foundation buildings, and a cloister on the edge of the old town. During World War II the collections were moved to safe storage; the church and foundation buildings were badly damaged by bombs in 1945 and later rebuilt, and the collections could not be seen in full again until 1963. Under archaeologist Mathilde Grünewald (1980–2012), the departments on prehistory and early history and on the Roman and Frankish periods were redesigned.
Between 2007 and 2021, the facades, towers, and city wall were restored, and two lost cloister wings were rebuilt following the historical model; since 2020 they have expanded the exhibition space. The museum presents the city's history from the Stone Age to the present, focusing on Roman Borbetomagus, the Migration Period and Frankish era, medieval Worms, and the Imperial Diet of 1521. After the Nibelungenmuseum closed, the Andreasstift also took over the Nibelung theme in 2026, with a cinema and a new exhibition in the tower room.
