The museum goes back to the painter Oskar Seyffert (1862–1940), a professor at the Dresden School of Applied Arts, who saw in the work of craftspeople and rural amateurs a lively alternative to the historicizing applied arts of his day. He collected pottery, furniture, blue-dyed textiles, traditional costumes, toys, and Christmas decorations, founded an association, and opened the museum in the Jägerhof in 1913.
The Jägerhof in the Innere Neustadt recalls the electoral hunting establishment, which Elector August moved to Altendresden in 1568; the Renaissance building took on its present form around 1600. During the air raid of February 1945 the upper floors burned out, yet by Christmas 1945 there was already an exhibition on the first floor again. From 1950 to 1952 the building was restored as the first of Dresden's destroyed museum buildings.
In 1957 the folklorist Manfred Bachmann became the first specialist to head the museum; when he became director general in 1968, the museum joined the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. For a time it shared the Jägerhof with the puppet theater collection, which can now be seen in the Kraftwerk Mitte. The collection continues to grow, increasingly including works by contemporary self-taught artists.
The permanent exhibition shows Christmas figures from the Ore Mountains, wooden toys, dollhouses, Sorbian costumes, and the parlor of a damask weaver. The showpiece is a mechanical figure theater from the first half of the 19th century. A dedicated children's trail and the annual Easter and Christmas exhibitions with folk artists define the museum.
