Museum Goch
Art museum in the former district court of Goch: late Gothic sculptures from the Lower Rhine in dialogue with contemporary art, plus a sculpture garden.
Om museet
A first Goch museum was set up by Jean Klein, known in the town as "Papa Klein," in 1930 in the historic Steintor gate. After Goch was largely destroyed in 1945, the museum reopened at the same location in 1956 with the rescued holdings.
After long planning, it moved into the former district court on Kastellstraße, which was extensively restored and converted for this purpose; the new building was opened on October 26, 1991, with a considerably expanded collection. The operator is the town of Goch, supported by the friends' association Museum & Freunde, founded in 1990, which has also included a MuseumsClub for children and young people since 2005.
The collection is presented not chronologically but as a juxtaposition of eras. Its focal points are late Gothic wooden sculptures from the Lower Rhine, works by the Goch sculptor Ferdinand Langenberg and the 19th-century Düsseldorf painter Eduard von Gebhardt, as well as works by the ZERO artists Günther Uecker, Heinz Mack, and Otto Piene. In addition, a collection of young contemporary art is growing, often through purchases from the museum's own temporary exhibitions in the large first-floor rooms. Permanently installed works on the façade and in the sculpture garden, which opens onto the Niers river, continue the dialogue outdoors.
