Städtisches Museum Kalkar
City museum in two Gothic stepped-gable houses at Kalkar's town hall with city history, Rhenish painting, and changing exhibitions.
Om museet
In 1958, the town of Kalkar acquired a stepped-gable house in Brick Gothic style built around 1500, which had previously served as a residential and commercial building. After a comprehensive renovation of the facade and the restoration of the old room layout with an entrance hall spanning two floors, the building opened in 1966 as the Städtisches Museum.
The foundation of the art collection was laid by the art historian Jakob Heinrich Schmidt, who taught for a long time at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and spent his retirement in Kalkar. Through his contacts, numerous works by painters of the Düsseldorf School and Rhenish Expressionism entered the collection, including works by Heinrich Nauen, Gerhard Janssen, Max Clarenbach, Hermann Teuber, and Franz Radziwill.
An intermediate building added in the 1970s with rooms for changing exhibitions connects the museum to the neighboring oldest townhouse in the town, from 1430, which houses the historically significant city archive. In addition to city history items such as the Gerichtsbild (court painting) and the old town scales, the museum owns a large collection of medals, plaques, and cast ironworks by the Düsseldorf sculptor Heinrich Moshage. Every year the museum shows several exhibitions of contemporary art, organized by the Verein der Freunde Kalkars and the Niederrheinischer Kunstverein.
