Museum und Park Kalkriese
Archaeological museum with observation tower and park in Bramsche-Kalkriese on the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, with original finds such as the Kalkriese mask.
Om museet
The starting point was Roman coins and sling bullets that the British amateur archaeologist Tony Clunn discovered near Kalkriese in 1987 and 1988. From 1989, systematic excavations followed that uncovered traces of a major battle between Roman troops and Germanic tribes on the Kalkrieser Berg; the site is associated with the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE. Research on site continues to this day.
As part of Expo 2000, the museum park was created first, designed by the Swiss architects Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer together with the firm Zulauf Seippel Schweingruber. On April 21, 2002, the museum building opened with its Corten steel facade and the tower about 40 meters high. In the park, rust-red steel plates mark the presumed route of the legions and steles mark the course of the Germanic rampart; three pavilions for seeing, hearing, and asking invite reflection on the place.
The permanent exhibition summarizes the results of more than 30 years of research. On the first floor, original finds are on display, including the well-known mask and a segmented armor (lorica segmentata) recovered in 2018 that is considered the oldest known of its kind in the Roman Empire; it also covers the everyday life of Romans and Germanic peoples. The floors of the tower are devoted to the reception history of the battle and end with a panoramic view over the historic landscape. The site is operated by VARUSSCHLACHT im Osnabrücker Land gGmbH, supplemented by a visitor center with shop, café, and conference room.
