Museum Wasserburg
Municipal museum in a late Gothic patrician house in Wasserburg's old town with 3,000 years of cultural history of the city and region on four floors.
Om museet
The museum's beginnings go back to 1888, when a collection on city history was first shown in Wasserburg's Michaelskapelle. The foundation was formed by coins, weapons, and antiquities that the town clerk Joseph Heiserer had gathered in the first half of the 19th century. Later the collection was spread across rooms in the town hall and the Schranne.
In 1936 the Heimatverein (local history society) acquired a late Gothic townhouse on Herrengasse and opened the Heimathaus there in 1938. The building, erected around the middle of the 15th century in the typical Inn-Salzach style, has a Gothic living hall, vaults, and an arcaded courtyard. In 1945 the house passed to the city, and in 1963 a neighboring property was added for the growing collection.
Today the museum shows around 8,000 objects on four floors, mostly in small staged settings: a historic kitchen, a classroom, testimonies of Inn river shipping and the salt trade, a mail coach, and a rare mail sleigh. The attic is devoted entirely to fully furnished craftsmen's workshops. Among the focal points is one of the largest furniture collections in southeastern Upper Bavaria. Temporary exhibitions, especially on Christmas themes during Advent, round out the program.
