Om museet

Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche founded the archive in Naumburg in 1894 to collect her brother's papers and control the interpretation of his work. It moved to Weimar in 1896, and in 1897 she acquired the Villa Silberblick, where she brought the ailing philosopher; Friedrich Nietzsche died here on August 25, 1900.

From 1902 the Belgian artist Henry van de Velde redesigned the ground floor in Art Nouveau style: the dining room, library and lecture room, and workrooms for the archivists still form an almost completely preserved Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art). The remodeled house opened in October 1903 on Nietzsche's birthday. The archive came under criticism for tampering with texts and biography; during the Nazi era it sought proximity to the regime, and Hitler visited it several times.

In the GDR the institution was dissolved in 1956, and the papers went to what is now the Goethe- und Schiller-Archiv. Since 1991 the van de Velde rooms have been open as a museum, complemented by an exhibition on the history of the house and the archive's role under National Socialism. Nietzsche's papers have been part of the UNESCO Memory of the World since 2025. The house has been closed for renovation since November 2025.
