The 70th annual exhibition shows paintings, watercolors, and prints on portraiture, landscape, the sea, flowers, and biblical themes; 37 works are on view in Seebüll for the first time.
Om museet
Starting in 1927, Emil Nolde and his wife Ada had a house built on a dwelling mound (Warft) near Seebüll, close to the Danish border; the painter designed it himself in close collaboration with an architect friend. In the 1930s a picture hall was added as an extra story. Around the cubic brick house, the couple laid out a flower garden whose beds trace the initials of their first names.
During their lifetimes, Ada and Emil Nolde stipulated that their estate should pass to a foundation. After the painter's death in 1956, the Stiftung Seebüll began its work and, from 1957, showed a new selection from the extensive holdings of paintings, watercolors, and prints in the former residence every year. This tradition of annual exhibitions continues to this day.
From 2004 the site was reorganized: older outbuildings were removed, and a visitor forum with a shop, restaurant, and painting school was built, along with other new buildings. A Berlin branch of the foundation existed for several years and closed in 2014. From 2020 to 2022 the Nolde house was restored in line with heritage conservation standards and made step-free for the first time.
Beyond the art, the museum today also takes a critical look at Nolde's biography, including his stance toward National Socialism and the ban on painting that the regime imposed on him in 1941.
